About San Francisco

Located in north central California, along the Pacific coast, San Francisco is a beautiful city with many interesting things to see and do. You could easily spend a week here and want to stay for much longer. For those who have never been to San Francisco, please remember that evenings tend to be quite cool, and a jacket or sweater is a nice thing to have. Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur to the south, Marin County to the north, and the wine producing Napa and Sonoma valleys to the north are all within reasonable driving distance of the city.

Getting There

Airports

Several major airports serve the San Francisco area: San Francisco International Airport, Oakland International Airport, and San Jose International Airport. Of the three, San Jose International Airport is the furthest away.

If you're looking to buy airplane tickets on the Web, we've pulled together a few shopping tips for you.

If you plan on staying in San Francisco, we highly recommend you use public transportation. If you plan on traveling outside of the city proper, north to wine country, south to Silicon Valley or the Monterey Peninsula, you will need a car.

Currency Exchange

Unlike other countries, exchanging foreign currency in America is not a common activity. Here are some places you can exchange currency:

  • At the airport — Most convenient, but not necessarily the best exchange rates
  • Commercial exchange services —

Thomas Cooke
San Francisco Downtown
75 Geary Street
San Francisco, CA 94108
9am-5pm Mon-Fri / 10am-4pm Sat
415-362-3453

American Express Travel Service
455 Market Street
San Francisco, CA 94105
415-536-2600
8:30am-5:30pm Mon-Fri / 9:00am - 3:30pm Sat

The Universal Currency Converter can help you find the approximate exchange rate. Because these sites provide commercial exchange rates, your actual rates will vary (invariably higher), and may include service charges and other fees.

Getting Around Within San Francisco

  • MUNI — buses, trolley buses, cable cars, including schedules, fares, maps, history, and recommended tours.
  • BART — Bay Area Rapid Transit, links Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco.
  • On foot — San Francisco is small enough that one of the best ways to see the city is to walk. Quoting from excite.travel.com :

"The best way to get a grip on what makes the city so extraordinary is to walk. Armed with a good map, you could plow through much of the city center in a day, although it's better to wander, unbound by itineraries. San Francisco's diverse attractions are often best found just dawdling, rather than by frenzied sightseeing. The most interesting districts, certainly, merit at least half a day each of just roaming about."

Near the Hotel

Working on this. :o)

Japantown

The convention hotel is located within a reasonable distance from Japantown, one of the highlights of San Francisco. This area includes excellent restaurants and shopping. There are four major malls in the Japantown area: the Miyako Mall, the Kintetsu Mall, the Buchanan Mall, and the Kinokuniya Building.

Other excellent resources for the general area include:

In addition, there are lots of places to eat in Union Square and Chinatown, and also along Market Street. and Maiden Lane.

Japanese food, if selected carefully, can satisfy most vegetarians. There are many kinds of sushi containing only vegetable, tofu, or egg. Appetizers like agedofu (deep fried tofu, ask them to leave the bento flakes off) or edamame (boiled soybeans) are also very good. In addition, the following restaurants serve exclusively or primarily vegetarian food:

    (415) 921-7600
