Hmmm...

What are the capabilities of this Karaoke machine? Is it its own player? Does it only take Karaoke discs? Can it plug into a larger speaker system?

It has it's own player, so far as I know it can play both Karaoke and non-karaoke CDs (not sure about homemade/burnt CDs), and it's got the normal AV output to connect to a TV (necessary to see the lyrics and camera). Then you could hook the TV up to a bigger sound system.

I love doing karaoke. Of course being the shy person that I am, I need to have a few drinks beforehand ^.^ I can speak japanese but I can't understand a lot of it... but I would like to try to sing a japanese song.

Hmmm.... It'd probably be better to use a computer-based system, if only for the problem that even burning as many CDs as we need would be a horrendous amount of work.
