Tax Forms and Licenses 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Hello! This is Twospoons here.
We have heard some rumors about aquiring a "Seller's License" as well as tax forms? We're from the state of Alabama, and the con we usually go to does not require such forms. Do we have to obtain such a license? And if so, how do we go about doing it?

CA law says you have to obtain a temporary sales permit if you are selling tangible property that would be subject to a sales tax if sold retail for a period of 30 days or less (which is the situation here). The permit is free; sales tax on the sales is paid back to the state by you. There are also directions to keep records and other paperwork...

http://www.boe.ca.gov/pdf/pub73.pdf This is a pdf with instructions and answers.

If you are going into the dealer's room as a business or making serious money, I'd definitely encourage a permit and sticking to all rules. However, practically speaking, I doubt anyone will patrol us little people in the Fan Market who will profit a whole $47 from homemade bookmarks and xeroxes. The con does not mention it in their rules so I assume it simply does not assume responsibility for our compliance.

Oh, and something that wasn't talked about here...if you are selling your own artwork....and you make a lot of money off of it, youv'e got to itemiz it on your tax return at the end of the year. My professor, and forgive me for saing this, she deserves it....is being audited because she iddn't itemize everything that she used to make the artwork she sold, or how much she sold for all that year. This is a very important thing to do if you're a working artest!
