Well, firstly, it's because of the nature of the con's business -- we have a short period during the year in which we generate revenue (only about 8-9 months). And a comparatively low amount of revenue that's being generated.
We DO have a merchant account (meaning, we can accept credit cards at point of service); however, being able to process them online is a whole different matter. It actually requires a separate service and that costs additional money. AND because we are considered an organization that provides "adult" products and services, that costs even more, as merchant services consider "adult" vendors to be high risk, thus warranting MUCH higher fees. Even if we're not technically as "adult" as other companies (porn sites, etc.).
It was determined to not be cost effective enough to accept credit card payments online for Yaoi-Con memberships. This may change in the future.
I believe we actually DO accept credit card payments when we sell memberships at other cons, such as the upcoming FanimeCon in San Jose next month. (I'm based in Tennessee, so haven't ever attended any of the other events that Yaoi-Con exhibits during)
If you're also wondering why we don't accept Paypal, well, Paypal has a NO ADULT PRODUCTS/SERVICES clause in their TOS; any company selling adult products or services and accepting Paypal can be subject to closure of account and holding of funds without notice.
