Knew that name sounded familiar when I first saw it :) I'ts one of my favorite mangas as well...wish there was more of it. I've read some of Toko Kawai's other work and liked it, but there was just something about Shouin and Horyu's relationship that really struck a chord with me.
I tend to gravitate towards the more romantic manga stories as well, and I agree, Neko stuff does nothing for me. Another manga artist in a similar vein is Hinako Takanaga - she tends to do a bit more humorous BL, like her Challengers series, but also does romance like her Little Butterfly series. I've been very happy to see so much published English yaoi/BL on the market recently, since I'm kind of crap when it comes to technology and don't have the time/energy/skills to figure out how to download scanlations on ICQ, lol. If you have any suggestions of series to check out, I would love to hear it. I'm always looking for new stuff to read (reading is my biggest addiction).
I've lived on Long Island my whole life, but I'm fairly well traveled, at least on the East Coast (Yaoi-Con will be my first trip West). There are some things I like about living here, and the majority of my family is here, but the cost of living is insane. And yeah, there is an overabundance of superficiality in the people here, as I know very well because I grew up in a town full of them. There was a time in my life when I couldn't wait to get out of here, but I came to the conclusion that when I do leave, it's going to be because I'm moving towards something better and not running away from something, if you can understand that.
The mountains sound beautiful - I hope you get to go there soon.
Hey...thought I would let you know that after meeting my friend Akira off of this site and soon getting to spend some time with you...at least I benefited by coming across two really neat individuals.
I'll talk to you later Kish. Funny how I came across as so "defensive" and now...we chat and talk for hours.
