AMV Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in the YaoiCon 2016 AMV Contest. Please read the following guidelines thoroughly to ensure proper submission of your entry.

Any "relationships" portrayed in your AMV must fit the yaoi category. M/M sexual content will be accepted and can be explicit if shown (this is an 18+ convention). However, no M/F or F/F sexual content will be accepted.

Creators must submit each video under a single category. The categories are: comedy, drama, romance, and action.

Please limit the length of each submission to 7 minutes. Any notes and titles count towards this limit. Each video should include both a two second leader and a two second trailer of blank screen that do not count towards the time limit (this makes creating the con copy simpler).

Footage used should be from anime/movies/OAVs, manga, or video games - exceptions are sometimes made on a case by case basis. Please contact the AMV staff if you have any questions.

All entries become the property of YaoiCon and will not be returned to the creator(s). It is assumed that creator(s) have given their permission for YaoiCon to show their submissions.

YaoiCon reserves the right to disqualify any entries containing content the staff deems inappropriate.

Submission

No more than five (5) entries per creator will be accepted. We cannot guarantee that all entries will be shown due to time constraints, but every effort will be made to show as many entries as possible. Each submission must be uploaded as a separate file following the labeling guidelines below.

Failure to follow these rules will result in us either only using the first entry in the file or complete disqualification.

Videos must be in AVI or MPG - no exceptions. Files resolution should be 720 or 1080, preferably encoded in MPEG2 files. Be certain to normalize your audio (for guides concerning this please see www.animemusicvideos.org). If you have any problems encoding please send an e-mail to the AMV staff.

Entries may not contain any footage with watermarks or commercial subtitles.

Any video previously submitted to the YaoiCon AMV contest will not be accepted. Videos must have been completed less than one year prior to the YaoiCon AMV Contest screening (September 18, 2016) or available for public viewing less than one year prior to the YaoiCon AMV Contest screening.

There are two parts to the submission process. Both parts must be completed for your submission to be considered complete.

Part 1: Submit the form on the YaoiCon website. All required fields must be completed.

Do not submit your video(s) without completing the entry form.

Part 2: Once your entry form is received you will be provided access to the Dropbox for video upload.

Please use the following name format for files: "Creator name - Video name - Anime - Song Title - Category." If you have difficulty submitting online please contact AMV staff.

Submission Deadline: July 31, 2016 at 11:59PST. No entries will be accepted at the door.

Creators will be notified on August 21 if their submissions have been accepted.

Judging & Finalists

Finalists will be selected by AMV staff and YaoiCon judges and will be notified on August 21, 2016. The number of finalists in each category is to be determined. AMV staff reserve the right to change the categorization of your entry if they believe your video was miscategorized. Creators will be contacted prior to any changes being made.

All finalists will be shown at the AMV Contest at YaoiCon 2016 for final judging by the audience for the following awards: Best Romance, Best Comedy, Best Drama, Best Action, and Audience Favorite. Technical judges will view the videos before the convention and decide on awards for Best Technical and Most Artistic.

YaoiCon's judging is final.

Winners

Winners will be announced during YaoiCon 2016; time and location to be announced. Video titles and creator names/pseudonyms of winning videos will be posted on the YaoiCon website after the end of the convention.

Please contact amv[at]yaoicon[dot]com with any questions, and continue to check the YaoiCon website for updates. Applications will be open soon!

FAQs

What is the deadline for AMV submissions?

The deadline to submit an AMV for YaoiCon 2016 is 11:59 PST July 31, 2016.

How do I submit an AMV?

Use the easy form on the YaoiCon website. You will receive confirmation that your form has been submitted once you have hit submit. You must first submit your form, then your video files through Dropbox once you have been given access by AMV staff.

Do I need previous experience creating AMVs?

Not at all! If you have a good idea and strong technical skills, feel free to submit a video. AnimeMusicVideos.org has great resources and guides to help you. Even if your video isn't accepted for YaoiCon 2016, you'll get great practice creating videos and sharpening your skills.

Do I need to be present at YaoiCon 2016 to submit an AMV?

You may submit your videos even if you will not be able to attend YaoiCon 2016, but it'd be better if we can see you there!

What kind of submissions will be accepted?

Anything that is relevant to our shared love of yaoi! M/F and F/F content will not be accepted. 18+ content will be accepted. YaoiCon reserves the right to disqualify any entry containing content it deems inappropriate. YaoiCon's judgment in this regard is final.

When will I know if my submission has been accepted as a finalist for judging at YaoiCon?

You'll receive a confirmation that your application has been received after you hit "submit." You should receive instructions to access and upload your video file(s) to Dropbox shortly thereafter. AMV staff will notify finalists on August 21.

What kind of footage can I use?

You may use images and footage from anime, manga, or video games. If you have questions, please contact AMV staff.

What kind of files should I upload to Dropbox?

Files should have a resolution of 720 or 1080. AVI, MPG, and MPEG2 formats are acceptable. If you have any problems encoding please e-mail the AMV staff.

When will the finalist entries be shown for audience judging?

Finalist entries will be shown at the AMV Contest at YaoiCon 2016. The specific date, time, and location are TBA. Please keep checking the YaoiCon website for the release of the final schedule prior to con.

Will I be notified if there is a problem with my entry?

If your entry is disqualified or does not conform to the stated guidelines AMV staff will notify you. If there is a technical problem and your submission is received early enough for AMV staff to review it before the finalists must be selected, you will be notified and given a chance to correct the error.

How does judging work?

Once the submission deadline has passed YaoiCon staff will review entries and select finalists in each of the four categories to be judged by ballot by the audience at the AMV Contest showing at YaoiCon 2016. We will select as many entries as possible to showcase the talents of our creators, but there are time constraints we must be mindful of! Technical judges will select winners of two technical awards prior to the convention.

Ballots collected at the AMV contest will be counted and audience-selected winners will be announced at the convention. The date, time, and location of the announcement will be given at the AMV contest.

What are these categories? Why do I have to pick one? What if my video fits more than one category?

The four categories that submissions will be judged in are Comedy, Romance, Action, and Drama. You tell us which category your entry falls into, and we will show it alongside other entries in the same category. This is to help the audience judge finalists at con. Even if you think your video falls into more than one category, it can only be shown and judged in one. So, use your best judgment and preference as the creator and select only one category to submit your entry under. You may submit other entries under other categories.

I have so many ideas and so much time! How many videos can I submit?

You may submit up to five videos per creator or creator team. No person may have more than five submissions with his/her name attached to them.

Does YaoiCon have a "freshness" requirement?

Yes. Your video must have been completed within one year prior to the AMV Contest screening, which will take place on September 18, 2016. Entries submitted to previous YaoiCon AMV Contests will not be accepted.

Will you accept my entry by mail?

Only online submissions through the approved Dropbox link will be accepted. If you have technical issues regarding this, please contact the AMV staff.

Who do I contact if I still have questions?

Please contact amv[at]yaoicon[dot]com with any questions! And keep checking these FAQs for new answers!
